The CIC provides current, accurate and comprehensive information and referral. The service is free (except for cost of publications), confidential
and available to any member of the community.
The types of requests received by the CIC are many and varied. They cover a diversity of issues, including employment services, tenancy
rights, family and individual crisis referral, recreational activities, disability access and services and new residents' information.
Above all the Community Information Centre's workers have time to listen, and time to seek and provide information. Our publications are
widely used by community workers and organisations to assist in the referral of clients to appropriate agencies.

The philosophy of the CIC is that access to information is essential to the empowerment of the individual.
The goals of the CIC are:
- To increase the quality, quantity, diversity and accessibility of information available to the community;
- To identify gaps within the available community services; and
- To develop the information retrieval skills of all people and organisations in contact with the CIC.

The Centre was established in 1976 as a volunteer organisation and since then has continued to provide information to residents, a wide
range of community groups and government departments.
The CIC has a community-based Management Committee which develops overall policy and oversees the activities of a part-time coordinator.
The coordinator and a team of skilled volunteers manage day-to-day operation.
Townsville City Council has strongly supported the Centre since its beginnings. It provides a substantial annual grant, the provision of
rent-free premises and information technology support. Without this support we could not provide our services. Other funds come from the sale
of publications and occasional grants.
Thuringowa City Council also provides funds to assist us in providing our service to its residents.
